“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12 KJV
This song brings back strong memories of my early days at church. Jackie has been singing it my entire life (and longer). I love a song that tells a story: ships out in the crashing waves, looking for a guiding light to lead them home. During a dark time in my life, I was lost out in the crashing waves. Jesus, in his love, reached down His hand and guided me to shore. If it wasn’t for Him, my ship would sail no more.
The second verse goes into how people want the lighthouse torn down just because it’s old. I love old buildings, the history they hold, the stories they share just by existing. Someone worked and lived in those old buildings. I drive by the remaining ones in wonder of everything that has gone before. The Bible is ancient. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word…” and like my pastor’s grandmother would always say, “The Word of God will stand when the world’s on fire.” Just because something is old does not mean it is obsolete. This is true whether you’re speaking of a lighthouse, a historic building, or Scripture.
